What to do After a Car Accident

  • Turn on your hazard lights alerting other vehicles around you to slow down and avoid the scene.
  • If there are no injuries involved and/or the damage is minor, pull out of traffic and into an adjacent area that is safe to observe the damage and exchange information.
  • If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately to receive police, fire, and medical assistance; do no move your car although walking to a safer area is highly recommended.
  • Do not discuss fault or liability with the other party; limit your discussion about the accident to the investigating police and your insurance agent. Don’t even say “I’m sorry” because this can be seen as an admission of fault.
  • Exchange information with anyone involved in the accident including name, address, telephone contact, a valid email addess, the name and policy number of the auto insurance company, vehicle information tht would include make, model, year and the number on the license plate.
  • Be sure to get the name and phone number of anyone who actually witness the accident.
  • Be sure to write down any information about the area of the accident, the date and time of the incident, and a very specific note about the location of the impact and final resting points of all involved vehicles. It would be helpful to note any contributing factors such as traffic and/or weather conditions.
  • If the police were called and an officer did come to the accident scene, it is appropriate to make a note of that person’s name, police department, I.D. badge number, the handling department, and if possible the number that will be placed on incident report.
  • If you can safely do so, take pictures of your vehicle and the other vehicle(s) or any damage.
