Your family spends a lot of time in the car and the first thing you do is make sure your kids are buckled in – but are they safe? Not only do you want to be sure your kids are secure in the seat, you also want to know they are riding in the proper car seat as far back in the car as possible.

Remember, the safest place for your child to ride is the back seat of the car!

It is important to check your car seat manufacturer instructions for guidelines regarding height and weight appropriate for the child and the car seat. It is for a child to be in a rear-facing seat as long as possible. Once your child reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by the car seat guidelines, it is time for a forward-facing car seat; one with a harness is still best kept in the back seat to offer your child the most protection.

When your children outgrow the forward-facing car seat, check your car seat’s manufacturer guidelines to see if it is time for a booster seat in the back seat of the car. When it finally comes time to ride in a regular seat, your child’s seat belt should fit properly; this means the belt should lie securely across the upper thighs and across the shoulder and chest. If the belt is hitting across the stomach and neck, they are not properly secure and should still be in a booster seat.
